Betrayed

In musings, rants on July 12, 2010 by Gabor

Betrayed.

That’s how I feel.

Betrayed by the nasty way the Dutch team played in yesterday’s final. I am glad Spain won.

1974 was my first World Cup. The Dutch team lit up that tournament with their exhilarating Total Football. They should have won, but ran into Germany, the hosts, in the final.

4 years later, ditto, but they ran into the hosts Argentina in the final.

Since then I have held a torch for Holland as a football nation. I have had a policy of switching support to Holland as soon as England go out.

That is why I wanted Holland to win: for Cruyff, Neeskens, Krol et al. For Van Basten, Rijkaard and Gullit. For Bergkamp.

But yesterday we did not see a flair performance by the Dutch. It was nasty. It was 1982 vintage Germany: anyone remember Schumacher and Stielike? And as for that whinging git Robben. If Holland had won it would have been a travesty.

Before the end of the first half of yesterday’s final I had fallen out of love. I think it unlikely that I will be automatically switching my support to Holland next time England go out of a major tournament.

75 – Tuesday 16 March 2010 : written in the stars?

In musings on March 16, 2010 by Gabor Tagged:

I have always thought that horoscopes are just so much rubbish.  If you make a statement, say that this week will be good for Leos in terms of money or love or some such, then it is likely that this will be what some of the Leos reading it will want to read.  And it is likely that it will turn out to be true for some of them.  Those people will then have their faith in horoscopes reinforced.

I was reminded of this when Caroline read my horoscope for this week. It is very encouraging about a little project I have on the go right now. That project may not come off. If it does, was it written in the stars?

71 – Friday 12 March 2010 : King Street Tavern

A very pleasant evening with our German friends Dirk and Dagmar in the King Street Tavern in Southsea.  A very pleasant, relaxed atmosphere.  I drank the guest ale, Young’s London Gold.

A lot of discussion about why property is so phenomenally expensive in this country, whether to rent or buy, and the problems this causes for the UK economy being built on a bubble.

53 – Monday 22 February 2010 – one for the future

Oh dear.  Unfortunately the GB ladies curling team is not living up to early promise at the Winter Olympics.  Skip Eve Muirhead seems to have gone off the boil and to have lost some of the form that saw her take apart the Russian and German skips in earlier rounds.

On the plus side, she is 19.  I reckon that with more tournament experience, she should be a strong prospect for 4 or 8 years time, maybe for quite some years to come.

48 – Wednesday 17 February 2010 : the last great singles band?

In audio, musings on February 17, 2010 by Gabor Tagged:

I am listening to a compilation of 30 tracks by The Police, taken from across their 5 albums between about 1978 and 1984.  Although not so named, this compilation could with justification be called “Greatest Hits”.  6 or 7 tracks come from the band’s last album, Synchronicity, and I am reminded just how good that album was.  Listening to those tracks, I am back in Paris in September 1983, with a cassette of the album on endless repeat in my Walkman.

At least 10 of the 30 tracks on this compilation were major hit singles.  I am left with this thought: were The Police the last great singles band?  Now, to be a great singles band, the singles must themselves be great.  This is why I feel I can safely ignore all the various boy/girl bands of the 90’s and 00’s.  Westlife and The Sugababes simply do not count!

Any thoughts: please leave a comment.

39 – Monday 8 February 2010 : fruit and veg update

In musings on February 8, 2010 by Gabor Tagged: , ,

A quick update on last Wednesday’s post (no 34).  We have now eaten most of the vegetables that came in our box.  The quality has been really good.  I could certainly taste the difference.

I think the same can be said of the fruit.
