Congratulations to Spain, worthy winners of the 2010 World Cup.

A further post tomorrow, once my thoughts about the Dutch team have settled.

The 2010 football World Cup kicked off today in South Africa. I hope it will be a fantastic tournament. And that England win, or failing them Holland.

And many congratulations to Siphiwe Tshabalala, for an excellent first goal of the competition (and what a brilliant name!).

So come on everybody, get your vuvuzelas out!

59 – Sunday 28 February 2010 – own the podium

The Vancouver Winter Olympics.  Fantastic.  What a great set of Olympics.

We have enjoyed everything we have watched (well done the BBC!): snowboard cross, skiing (nordic and alpine), luge, skeleton bob, ice hockey, curling.

Topped off by an enthralling men’s ice hockey final settled by a sudden-death overtime goal scored by Canadian national hero Sidney Crosby, shown holding the flag.  Cometh the hour …

Which leaves 2 thoughts.

  • Will Rooney do the same for England in South Africa this summer?
  • Can London 2012 match this?

Amy Williams has just won Great Britain’s first individual Winter Olympic gold since Lake Placid in 1980.  Amy won the women’s skeleton bob, by a massive (for these events) overall margin of 0.56 seconds.

Now for the curling.  GB skip Eve Muirhead has been magnificent, taking apart the Russian and German skips so far.
